Spotlight on one piece of work
Every so often I intend to pick out a work of mine and provide a little background. The piece I have chosen this time is a sculpture I have recently finished called Cutter. It is carved out of Elterwater slate and sapele and measures 262mm (wide), 520mm (deep) and 430mm (high).
I am trying to convey the elegance of a sailing vessel heeling over as it speeds through the water … or of a shark’s fin cutting through the waves. However, it is also a very tactile piece – and colourful with the blue/green/grey slate contrasting against the reddish wood. Also there is a pleasing contrast between the apparently soft wood and the much harder stone.
Over the years Cutter will develop a patina as it is handled and that will enhance its appearance
